Contractor: RJM Construction
Architect: 292 Design Group
Engineer: Nelson Rudie & Associates
Owner: City of Elk River
Construction is completed on a massive multipurpose facility in Elk River that has new ice rinks, a senior center, meeting space and banquet hall; the new complex and repurposed ice rink has an overall size of 149,000 square feet. This former Olympic-sized ice rink facility was converted into a field house for turf sports like soccer, football and lacrosse.
In total, the project cost $35 million and was funded through a half-cent sales tax that Elk River voters approved in the November 2019’s election. The multipurpose facility cost $27.5 million, with the balance of the funds going to park improvements, including new fast-pitch ballfields.
City Administrator Cal Portner said the facility will serve the entire community, from small potlucks to youth and adult athletics to concerts with 1,600 people or more.
Precast components were used through this project including stadia and structural wall panels. Wells Concrete produced and erected 15,000 sq. ft. of architectural insulated wall panels for the south lobby, senior center, and future lease space as well as at the south footing line of the facility. The precast façade showcases a beautiful mix of sandblast and acid etch finishes in a white and black mix colors.
