Are you looking for a career start or a career change? Maybe the construction industry hasn’t entered your thoughts, but it should. There are so many avenues that you can take in construction, whether it’s creative, technical or both. Surely there will be a job that suits your skills and personality.
While companies struggle to fill positions in this expanding industry, women make up only 9% of the construction industry. There is a lot of room for us to move in and move up.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that on average across all industries, women make just 81.1% of what a man makes. The good news is that the construction industry values women as much as men, where we make on average 99.1% of our male counterparts. Of course there is more to a job than financial benefits, but it’s a good place to start!
There are many places to research opportunities in the industry, and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is a great place to start. They have 115 local chapters that offer educational resources and information about joining the industry.
I went to Dunwoody College of Technology to kick-start a career change, and after 22 years in the precast concrete industry, the decision to work in construction has been a great one.
